Old School Homemade Ginger Beer (2 L)

Made BlixSam Style with BlixSam Products
A traditional homemade ginger beer with a warming ginger kick, refreshing citrus notes and a light natural fizz. Perfect for hot summer days or a classic South African braai.

🛒 Ingredients (Makes 2 Litres)

  • 150 g fresh ginger, peeled and grated
  • 1½ cups brown sugar
  • 2 tsp BlixSam Arm Maat Spice
  • 1 tsp BlixSam Steakhouse Spice (a small pinch for warmth)
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp orange juice
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence
  • 2 litres cold water
  • 1 tsp active dry yeast

👨‍🍳 Method

  1. In a large bowl, combine the grated ginger, brown sugar, BlixSam Arm Maat Spice, BlixSam Steakhouse Spice, lemon juice, orange juice and vanilla essence.
  2. Add 1 cup of the cold water and stir until the sugar has dissolved.
  3. Pour the mixture into a clean 2-litre plastic bottle using a funnel.
  4. Top up with the remaining cold water, leaving about 5 cm of space at the top.
  5. Sprinkle the yeast into the bottle. Do not stir.
  6. Screw the lid on tightly and leave at room temperature for 24–48 hours to ferment.
  7. Once fizzy, strain the ginger beer through a fine sieve into a clean bottle.
  8. Refrigerate until well chilled before serving.

🍋 BlixSam Tip

Serve over plenty of ice with fresh lemon slices and mint. For an extra spicy kick, add a light sprinkle of BlixSam Arm Maat Spice before serving.
